Evening Primrose oil benefits for acne and PMS. Ever suffered so badly from PMS, acne and food cravings? Yes, I don’t think that I am the only one. I tend to go into severe depression and the fact that my appetite increases does not make it any better. So, this week I am writing about a really effective natural solution that has been helping. I am going to be discussing Evening Primrose oil benefits for acne, PMS and food cravings.

I write a lot about health and wellness and firstly if you haven’t read my last blog post about foods we should be eating to keep us fuller for longer check it out. These foods also help during PMS because they keep the blood sugar levels stabilized. I also try to eat boiled eggs because the protein also helps to keep the blood sugar stabilized.

Evening primrose oil is derived from the seeds of the primrose plant. (Oenothera biennis) The plant itself has yellow flowers which are also edible. The oil has many beneficial uses. This comes from the fact that it contains omega 6 essential fatty acids to which both linoleic acid (LA) and gamma linoleic acid (GLA) belong.

There is scientific evidence as to why Evening Primrose Oil helps with Acne. This is because the oil contains GLA. According to research, GLA helps your skin retain its moisture as well as many other benefits that are really good for your skin. I found some really extensive research from Oregon State University on the role of Omega 6 and 3’s on Skin health. Basically, it is good for the skin structure, barrier as well as overall skin health. More specifically for acne, more clinical trials are needed. However according to healthline.com Evening Primrose Oil can be effective for pimples, nodules and blackheads. When I take Evening Primrose Oil my skin is soft supple and there aren’t any signs of enlarged pores. I also usually break out during PMS and I haven’t since incorporating this into my lifestyle. Therefore I can attest to the Evening Primrose Oil benefits for acne.


There seems to be insufficient scientific evidence to say whether or not Evening Primrose Oil is effective for the treatment of PMS symptoms. However,  according to US National Library of MedicineNational Institutes of Health, “most trials to date have significant methodological flaws and must be considered preliminary.” It is possible that Evening Primrose Oil can stop breast pain during PMS, this is because breast pain could be caused by lack of fatty acids. EPO can assist with providing the body with a sufficient amount to reduce the pain. Due to the lack of serotonin in my body, I personally take EPO for PMS and can say that it does improve my mood. I cannot say that it takes away all the symptoms, but it does, in fact, help me.

Appetite suppressant

There seems to be conflicting evidence to say whether Evening Primrose oil benefits as an appetite suppressant. However, according to livestrong.com, there are benefits to using it for weight loss as well as weight maintenance. This is because it contains GLA. Basically, GLA works to rev up your metabolism and gives you more energy. According to a few websites, women have reported having a decrease in appetite due to consuming Evening Primrose Oil. It is safe to say that I am also one of those women. During PMS I usually crave many foods and eat more than usual. Since incorporating EPO in my diet I haven’t been craving the unhealthy foods like potato chips and chocolate. If I feel hungrier than usual, I just take a pill and my hunger diminishes.


According to medicalnewstoday.com ”The recommended dose of evening primrose oil is 8 to 12 capsules a day, at a dose of 500 milligrams per capsule.”

My personal recommendation 

If you suffer really badly from PMS and food cravings, especially during PMS I recommend that you try Evening Primrose Oil. However, please look out for any contradictions that it may have to your body.  It does improve my mood and diminish my food cravings. Also, when I do take EPO my skin is soft, supple and pimple free. It also decreases the size of my pores on my face. Therefore I can recommend this natural product if you suffer really badly from acne, PMS and food cravings. Until I find a better solution, EPO will be my natural solution of choice.
